CPD

Continuing Professional Development is the name given to the educational activities that all consultants are required participate in. This can be in the form of national or international courses and conferences, local education events, on-line learning and private study.

The content is discussed in the consultant’s annual appraisal and ensures that they are familiar with advances in their specialist fields, whilst also giving the opportunity to develop new skills or interests. STAAG Consultants attend a broad range of educational events, ensuring that they keep abreast of the latest developments in anaesthesia, peri-operative medicine, and pain management.

Mandatory training

This is the training that is considered essential by the hospitals that we work in. It includes subjects such as Resuscitation, Health & Safety and Infection Control. Mandatory training is checked on an annual basis to ensure that all STAAG Consultants are up to date on these important topics.

Case Review Meetings

In medicine, not all cases are straight forward. When we treat patients with complex health conditions or after managing unexpected complications, it can be useful to review and discuss these events afterwards, as a group of colleagues. STAAG Consultants meet regularly to review more unusual cases and make sure we can all learn from these events. Obviously patient data is anonymised before being presented.

We also have a system whereby clinical questions can be discussed amongst the group in real time, so that our patients can benefit from the specialist knowledge and experience of the whole STAAG group.

Safeguarding

Keeping children and vulnerable adults safe whilst in our care is a top priority. All STAAG Consultants have had Enhanced DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service) checks and completed Level 3 Safeguarding Adults courses. In addition, those who work with children have also completed a Level 3 Safeguarding Children course.

Audit and Feedback

Medical audit is a quality improvement process that aims to improve patient outcomes by comparing clinical care to known standards and implementing change when required. All STAAG Consultants are involved in audit as a way of improving the treatment we deliver to our patients. In addition, we regularly collect feedback from patients and healthcare colleagues, as part of our efforts to deliver the best possible anaesthetic care.
